Design-Worthy: Articulating the Links between Cost, Quality and Social Responsibility

A friend of mine working in Haiti recently asked, “How can westerners protest working conditions for the third-world poor when they are the ones creating demand for cheap objects?” Too often we separate ourselves from our own roles in cause and effect related to consumer power and socially responsible purchasing. This is particularly relevant to the interior design community, including clients and students. We’re often conflicted about product cost in the face of issues such as homelessness, but I contend that this does not have to be the case.
