UC Berkeley's Global Research Campus is designed for carbon neutrality in a rigorous planning, technical, stakeholder engagement process. It is a catalyst for regeneration of fragile land and neighboring abandoned sites, aiming to achieve net zero/positive energy, water and carbon neutrality through a public private partnership model for 5.4M sf. It is a research campus focused on sustainability and climate change with an expressed intent to engage the local community and youth in STEM education. This is a new development model for the University of California and aims to set a new paradigm of carbon neutral performance and community engagement.
